Since my husband is an architect, we like to go to things that support architects and it is even better when they are fun. 🙂 This past weekend was the 30th annual sandcastle building competition that the American Institute of Architects puts on every year in Galveston. While my husband’s firm did not participate in the competition, we still had a good time playing on the beach and watching the sandcastles form.
I am always impressed with artistic people. I really want to be artistic and I have a few mediums that I am better at than others (e.g., classroom bulletin boards), but overall I am not an artist. Some of the sandcastles we saw were truly works of art.
Each team started with a theme and a pile of sand.
Some teams used molds and some just sculpted more free form. The molds were more impressive, but I always like the people who work from scratch.
Then, after hours (they worked from 10:00-3:00) the sand castles began to come together. The detail work was beautiful and it was fun to walk around and see each team work and play.
After a day of walking up and down the beach, eating free BBQ, drinking lots of water, and a great deal of people/animal watching, it was time to go find some lunch.
We went and ate at a place called The Spot on the sea wall. It was so much fun and the food was fabulous. I highly recommend it. There are multiple “spots” you can go depending on what you want to eat and I am totally craving the hamburger and fries I ate there. The milkshakes are great, too.
