I want to start out by apologizing for the quality of these pictures. Â We were in a dark gym and I just had my point and shoot (should have brought my good camera), but I could not miss this opportunity to share with you the Donkey Ball experience I had this week.
My husband is a commercial architect and he designs many different types of buildings, but does a lot of work on schools. Â He is currently in the process of updating a school and designing a gym for a little town around Waco. Â The gym they currently have looks like an aircraft hanger and they are ready to see it go.
To commemorate the fact that it is being torn down this week (the new gym is already built) they decided to have a Donkey Ball game to raise money for the school.
Having never seen a Donkey basketball game before, we decided to drive the 2 hours after work on Wednesday to see the game and I honestly had no idea what to expect. Â I do have to say that it has been a long time since I laughed that hard and while we did not get back home until 11:00 Wednesday night, it was totally worth it. Â Donkeys don’t move when you want them to and move too much when you don’t. Â They buck, kick, poop (we had to have clean up breaks), run wild, and throw people off any time they can. Â As I told others as I showed them the videos the next day. how can you blame the donkeys? Â Would you do the same thing if people kept jumping on your back?
I do have to say that I felt a little bad for the older donkey’s because they looked tired, but I know that they were well taken care of and they are pampered when they aren’t in the game.
To give you a little background on Donkey Ball, it has been around since the 1930’s and many schools use it as a fundraiser. Â There are four donkey’s with riders on each team and you have to be on the donkey to shoot or block but you can get off to pull them along (or if they throw you off).Â
I left the house thinking I would love to ride one and about three minutes into the game, I was glad I was wearing a skirt so there was no way they would ask me. Â If you ever get a chance to go watch a Donkey Ball game, I highly recommend it. Â School fundraisers are a worthy cause (schools never have enough money) and it will be a night that you laugh a lot and you will be glad you went.
Interesting! 🙂
Gerrit and the girls and I went to one at Conroe High a few years back. Totally fun! And, I second your comment of schools never having enough money! We love fundraising. The first three letters are FUN. Call me next time you go to donkey basketball.
